How to create and Ice Cream Sandwich VM on a PC

Easiest Step-By-Step Tutorial for Creating an Ice Cream Sandwich Virtual Machine on a PC

INSTRUCTIONS (Build Revision: 2012-03-07):
  1. Install VirtualBox (version 4.1.14-77440 or higher)
    1. Download Here: https://www.virtualbox.org/
  2. Run VirtualBox, click File, select Import Appliance
  3. Download THIS archive and extract the files locally. In VirtualBox, choose the "Android-x86 (ICS).ova" file to complete the Import process
  4. Start the Android-x86 machine (Let the default selection boot)
  5. Once the Android OS boots, click "Machine" on the VirtualBox menu bar, and select "Disable Mouse Integration". (This will give you a blue mouse that you can now use inside the Android OS)
  6. Unlock the screen by dragging the lock to the side, and enjoy Ice Cream Sandwich!
===
TIPS:
  • Press Right-CTRL on your keyboard to release your mouse from the virtual machine.
  • To turn off the virtual machine, select "Machine" from the menu bar and click "ACPI Shutdown".
NOT WORKING:
  • Camera
NOTE:
  • When a new Android-x86 release comes out, I will try to keep this thread updated with a new download package that contained an update OVA file. The instructional steps should never need updating as I will make all considerations in the new OVA files.

  1. Thanks, works nicely! I'd not been able to get the official eee iso to play nicely with virtualbox so this is really helpful.
One question though - how do you go about getting host networking working? I've played around with a few different configurations in virtualbox but so far, no joy inside the actual vm :(
    Thanks

    1. I apologise, should have Googled first. Here's how to set up your network inside the VM. Obviously you'll need to run these commands inside a terminal where you've run su to get root.
